Some things are better in your head so we made a hat
Inside his hat there is a ballet
Inside his hat there is a trap that moves us into making
A thinking hole, a cowboy womb, an object ready for possession

2016

In collaboration with Matthew Shalzi, we built a giant cowboy hat with a dance studio inside. The hat was created as a generative object, an open-ended theater space that could collect and generate performances, sculptures, and people. The hat is a host with an inner drag objective- an American symbol of masculinity tuned into an internal, creative space. The performances that occured in the hat were ephemeral and often undocumented, existing as bodily knowledge for those that visited and used the hat. The documentation from the hat, and what was collected through the process of it's making, has been used in studio-based sculpture and video work.

----- To shatter language in order to contact life means creating or recreating theatre. The crucial thing is not to believe this action must remain sacred, that is to say, set apart. And the main thing is to believe not that anyone can do it but that one needs to prepare for it.-----
